The Complete Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met here on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But in a larger sense we can not dedicate —we can not consecrate— we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled, here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but can never forget what they did here.

It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Information about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was founded by Jan Scruggs, who served in Vietnam from 1969-1970 as a infantry corporal. He wanted the memorial to acknowledge and recognize the service and sacrifice of all who served in Vietnam. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Inc. (VVMF), a nonprofit charitable organization, was incorporated on April 27, 1979, by a group of Vietnam veterans in Washington, D.C. Jan Scruggs (President of VVMF) lobbied Congress for a two acre plot of land in the Constitution Gardens. Significant initial support came from U.S. Senators Charles McC. Mathias, Jr. of Maryland and John W. Warner of Virginia. On July 1, 1980, in the Rose Garden, President Jimmy Carter signed the legislation to provide a site in Constitution Gardens near the Lincoln Memorial. It was a three and half year task to build the memorial and to orchestrate a celebration to salute those who served in Vietnam.

At that time, postal rates varied by distance traveled—under 300 miles, letters cost 5 cents per 1/2 oz; over 300 miles, letters cost 10 cents per 1/2 oz. (These rates fluctuated in the decade that followed.) Until prepayment became mandatory on April 1, 1855, Americans had the option to pay collect, which could entail higher rates. Since July 1, 1863, letters sent to all parts of the United States have been charged at the same rate.

Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cake Recipe
This no-egg recipe is made in one bowl and is rich and delicious.

What you need:
• 3 cups flour
• 2 cups sugar
• 6 tablespoons cocoa
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 2 teaspoons soda
• 2 tablespoons vinegar
• 2 teaspoons vanilla
• 1⁄2 cup butter, melted
• 2 cups cold water
• 1 recipe Creamy Chocolate
Frosting

How to make the recipe:

In a large mixing bowl mix together the dry ingredients; make a well in the middle.
Combine vinegar, vanilla, and butter; add to dry ingredients. Mix well.
Add 2 cups cold water and beat well. Pour into ungreased 9x13-inch pan or two 9-inch round pans.
Bake in a 350 degree F oven 30 minutes for large pan; 20 minutes for layers. Cool. Top with Creamy Chocolate Frosting. Serves 16.

Creamy Chocolate Frosting
• 1⁄2 cup butter
• 1 1⁄2 cups sugar
• 6 Tablespoons milk
• 1⁄2 cup light corn syrup
• 1 1⁄2 cups chocolate chips

In a heavy saucepan, combine first four ingredients and bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes.
Remove from heat; stir in chocolate chips. Stir until all the chips are melted.
Cool until spreadable. Frost the cake.

A It is more than 300 feet high.

Q Why is the flag sometimes called “Old Glory?”
A This term was coined by Captain Stephen Driver, a shipmaster from Salem, Massachusetts. In 1831 as a friend handed him a flag to take on his voyage, he exclaimed, “Old Glory!”

Q When was “The Star Spangled Banner” written and by whom? When did it become our national anthem?
A On September 13, 1814, a fierce battle ensued during the War of 1812. When daylight came, the flag was still there and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the song. It became the national
anthem on March 3, 1931.

Q Can the flag be draped on the top or front of a vehicle?
A: No. It can fly on the vehicle but not attached to it.

Q: Is it OK to use the flag for decoration?
A: Actually, that’s what bunting is for. Bunting in blue, red, and white stripes should be used for decorative purposes. The blue stripe should be at the top.

Q Why were the original stars arranged in a circle?
A The circle signified that the states were equal.

Q Was the bald eagle the only choice for the national symbol?
A Actually, no. It has been noted that Benjamin Franklin preferred the turkey to be the symbol, but John Adams and Thomas Jefferson won out with the bald eagle.

Tips on Gardening and Butterfly Gardens

Love to garden? Here are some fun tips.

If some of the residents had a garden at their home before moving to their current facility and miss it—here are some ideas:

• If there is a small area at the facility that could work as a garden, ask volunteers from a garden store to come and help organize the project. Grandchildren love to dig in the dirt, so ask families to come as well.
• Individuals can have their own areas to tend or perhaps groups of people can work together. Perhaps a tomato plant or two and some lettuce varieties would give everyone some tasty salad fare in the summer.
• If bright color is the goal, how about putting in some zinnias or petunias in the spring to enjoy all season long? Other cutting-garden flowers for making table decorations might be in order, too. You know what works best in your climate.

Just because residents have moved, it doesn’t mean they have to abandon a favorite hobby. And who knows, sharing tomatoes can make great friends!

Peanut Butter Brownie Recipe

Stir up some brownies that everyone will love using a box brownie mix and creamy peanut butter.
What you need:

• Large bowl
• Spoon
• Table knife
• 8x8-inch baking pan
• Measuring cups
• Brownie mix in a box (to fill an 8x8-inch pan)
• Egg, water, and/or other ingredients listed on the box mix
• 1/2 cup peanut butter

How to make the brownies:

1. Preheat the oven to the temperature indicated on the brownie mix box. Mix the brownie mix as directed on the box. Pour the mixture into the baking pan.
2. Using a spoon, drop the peanut butter by teaspoonfuls on six different spots on top of the brownie batter.
3. Use the knife to make lines through the batter, slightly mixing in the peanut butter. Don’t mix it too much.
4. Bake as directed on the brownie mix box. Let brownies cool for about 5 minutes before cutting. Makes 12 small brownies.

U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson is given credit for starting Earth Day in 1970. However, many others felt it was important to keep the Earth in the forefront when dealing with pollution, landfills, and gas emissions. The “green culture” and recycling are results of Earth Day thinking and action. Arbor Day was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton, who, as a journalist, encouraged the improvement of agricultural techniques when he served as President Grover Cleveland’s Secretary of Agriculture. The day is now the last Friday in April in many cities and communities.

Danny Boy is the story of a father who had four boys. The eldest three had gone off to war and been killed. The youngest boy, Danny, was 16 years old and was now going to war. The father knew that Danny, too, might die—and if he did that he, the Father, would die of a broken heart. This is his farewell song to his youngest son.

Mexican Salad Crisps

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo by making your own salad crisps and filling them with all kinds of goodies.

What you need:

• Purchased flour tortillas
• No-stick cooking spray such as Pam
• 2 ovenproof glass bowls such as Pyrex
• Baking sheet

Choice of things to put in the Salad Crisps such as:
Lettuce, cheese, sour cream, chiles, ripe olives, refried beans, salsa, cooked ground beef, or cooked chicken.

What you do:

1. Heat the oven to 400° F.

Note: Tortillas come in more than one size. Purchase small tortillas for small bowls and large ones for large bowls. Spray the no-stick cooking spray on both sides of the tortilla.

2. Be VERY SURE the bowls are ovenproof. Be sure that bowls are clean and dry. See Photo A.

3. Place the tortilla shell over one of the bowls. Fold the tortilla shell, if needed, to fit. The second bowl won’t fit tightly over the tortilla, it will just help keep its shape. See Photo B.

4. Place the bowls and tortilla on the baking sheet and place in oven. Bake for 3 minutes. Use a pot holder to take it out of the oven and also to take off the top bowl. Put the cookie sheet back in the oven and bake the tortilla 4 more minutes draped over just one bowl. Take the cookie sheet out of the oven and let the shell cool. Take it off of the other bowl. You just made a cool salad crisp! Note: You can make more than one in the oven at a time.

5. Now you are ready to fill the totally edible salad holder with whatever you like on your salad. Try shredded or chopped lettuce, black olives, green chiles, refried beans, sour cream, Monterey jack cheese, salsa, or any favorite combination. Eat right away.

Frankoma Pottery

While Frankoma Pottery is known for many interesting shapes, one of the best known pieces are their political mugs. The pottery company has a very interesting history.

Frankoma Pottery was once called Frank Potteries. In 1933 John Frank was teaching Art and Pottery at the University of Oklahoma and used local clay deposits to make pottery. Starting with only a small kiln, Frank started a studio in Norman, Oklahoma. In 1936 the name of the company was changed from Frank Potteries to Frankoma Pottery, using the Frank name and including the last three letters from Oklahoma. The company was later moved after a fire destroyed it.

According to the Frankoma Family Collector’s Association, “Frankoma became the pioneer in colored tableware, with designs in bold bas-relief, never before presented to the public”. Other very popular items include the political mugs. Each year the company came out with both a donkey and an elephant mug. These became very collectible and people all over the United States raced to complete their collection each year.

In 1866 the candy manufacturer NECCO made the first “conversation hearts” and called them “motto hearts”. At least 8 billion of those little candies are sold each year.

What you need:

• 10x8-inch piece of cardstock paper
• 11x9-inch piece of colorful scrapbook paper

• Scissors

• Fine-tip markers

• Crafts glue

• Paper punch

• Small piece of narrow ribbon

• Jewels (optional)

How to make the door art:

1. Trace or copy the pattern, below, and cut out. Or print the pattern directly onto cardstock on your printer. Add the designs and name using fine-tip markers. Cut out the larger heart shape from printed scrapbook or wrapping paper. Glue the smaller heart to the larger heart. Add jewels if desired. Punch a hole at each side and thread a ribbon through the holes. Tie a knot to secure. Hang on the door.

No doubt about it, it’s fun to watch the weather, particularly if you live in a cold climate, where your activities may depend on changes in the weather. If it’s possible – don’t put yourself in harm’s way – but building a snowman can be great fun, no matter what your “kid age” might be. We’re all kids at heart, right? If that’s not in the cards, how about making a snow angel and transporting yourself back in time? Now if you live in a climate that keeps you at 75 degrees all winter, well, you’ll just have to relive your youthful adventures in your memory!

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum-- preserving history about a great man.

This spectacular museum, which opened in the past five years, combines history with holograms and tradition with technology. It occupies an entire city block in Springfield, Illinois, and offers 50,000 square feet of immersion activities.

The spot brings to life the history of Abraham Lincoln’s world for kids of all ages. There are special-effects theaters. In one, where the Civil War battles seem all too real, cannon sounds make visitors cover their ears, as their chairs shake with the booms.

Historians, Lincoln scholars, and technicians brought the experience to screens, exhibits, and room settings. One area is set up like a modern-day television newsroom, bringing upto- the-minute reports on the events leading to the Civil War’s start. And from a log cabin setting to the White House, rooms give visitors an up-close look at the 16th President’s life.

The walk-through experiences give a “you-are-there” feel to exhibits which immerse visitors. There are also traditional museum galleries showcasing historical artifacts.

‘I Have a Dream’
Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most charismatic and inspirational leaders of our time, is honored on the third Monday of January, nearest his birthday. He was born January 15, 1929, and died April 4, 1968. He was the third generation of his family to be the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

As a strong leader for civil rights, he became a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He advocated non-violent demonstrations to fight discrimination. In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and combined his governing skills from the principles of Christianity and Gandhi. He traveled and spoke tirelessly for his beliefs and led protests, gave speeches, and wrote books. He helped with voter registration and led a peaceful march on Washington, D.C., with 250,000 people listening to his “I Have a Dream” speech.

He became a world figure and was the youngest man ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968.

Orange Cranberry Muffins Recipe

Ring in the New Year with these oh-so-yummy muffins. Serve with orange marmalade or strawberry jam.

What you need:

• 2 eggs

• 1 1⁄2 cups buttermilk

• 1⁄3 cup canola oil
• 2 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1⁄3 cup sugar
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• 1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda

• 1⁄2 teaspoon salt

• 1 tablespoon grated orange rind

• 3⁄4 cup dried cranberries

How to make the recipe:

1.) Grease bottoms of medium-sized muffin cup pan. In a small bowl, beat eggs and milk and stir in oil. Set aside.

2.) In a large bowl, mix all other ingredients. Add egg mixture and mix until just blended. Batter should be lumpy. Do not over mix.

3.) Fill muffin cups 3⁄4 full. Mix sugar and cinnamon together and sprinkle a little of the mixture on top of each muffin. Bake in a 400°F oven for about 15 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 12 muffins.

Special Tip

To make perfect muffins every time, remember that muffins, unlike cakes, need to be mixed only until the dry and liquid ingredients have been blended. Muffins are best when made by hand with the least amount of mixing, just enough to be sure all ingredients are blended, but never beaten. This will avoid having holes or “tunnels” in the finished muffin.

We all love to sing Christmas Carols—but did you know these fun facts?

Away in the Manger:
This simple hymn is often called “Luther’s Cradle Hymn”. Some say he didn’t write it but would have sung it to his own children and somehow was credited with the carol.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing: One of the most famous of Protestant hymn writers, Charles Wesley was inspired to write this beautiful carol as he walked to church on a morning in 1730 as he heard the pealing of the bells.

The Holly and Ivy: The holly was originally the Holy Tree, and this traditional song suggests the importance attached to the season. The tree sprung up for the first time beneath the footsteps of Christ when he first stood on earth.

O Little Town of Bethlehem: This song was composed by one of the few American writers, Phillip Brooks, in 1868 when his Sunday School class asked him for a song.

What Child is This? The words of this carol are sung to the English tune “Greensleeves”. Shakespeare mentions it twice in “The Merry Wives of Windsor”.

They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. Elegant Thanksgiving Centerpiece - Easy Projects

Create an almost magical centerpiece by putting one vase inside another. Use the centerpiece for special fall events. Everyone will be asking how you made it!

What you need:

• Large vase or canning jar

• Smaller vase to fit in larger jar

• Paper and Scissors for funnel

(optional)
• Marbles
• Skewer
• Flowers and water

How to make the centerpiece:

1.) Be sure the vases are clean and dry.

2.) Set the smaller vase inside the larger one. See Step 1.

3.) Make a paper funnel using a cone of paper or use a purchased funnel. Place the small part of the funnel between the vases and carefully pour the marbles between the vases. See Step 2.

4.) Use a long skewer to position the marbles as desired. See Step 3.

5.) Add flowers and water to the inner vase.

Holiday Icebox Cookies

This recipe is an old-time favorite when the “icebox” kept things cool! Everyone can help to cut up the dried fruits and nuts. The cookies are sliced instead of rolled so are easy to make and so delicious.

What you need:

• 2 cups fruit (candied pineapple, golden raisins, candied cherries, dates, dried apricots)
• 2 cups nuts (pecans, walnuts, brazil nuts)

• 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter

• 1⁄3 cup granulated sugar

• 1⁄3 cup packed brown sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 1 egg
• 1 2⁄3 cups flour
• 3⁄4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1⁄2 teaspoon salt

How to make the recipe:
1.) Cut up fruits and nuts and place in small bowl. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, and egg. In another bowl, mix flour, soda, and salt. Add fruit and nuts to the flour mixture. Add to the butter and sugar mixture and mix well. Shape into 2 logs about 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in plastic wrap and foil. Refrigerate dough logs overnight.

2.) When ready to bake, cut into slices about 1⁄2 inch thick. Place on greased cookies sheet and bake in a 350°F oven for 12 minutes or until lightly brown. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

Silly Eyeball Appetizers Recipe

They’ll look twice when they see these Silly Eyeball Appetizers. Gather everyone together to make these fun-to-eat treats.

What you need:

Cherry tomatoes
Pimento stuffed olives
Small sprigs of parsley
Sharp knife

How to make the recipe (for 2 eyes):

1 Wash and dry the tomato. Use a sharp knife to cut in half. See Photo A. Set aside. Cut one olive in half. Place a sprig of parsley on the cut tomato. Put the olive on top of the parsley. See Photo B.

The popular game show can be played many ways. One variation is to split into two teams and have the moderator read the question.

Anyone can yell out the answer—whoever is first gets the point for his or her team.The other way to play (similar to as on TV) is to choose 9 people to sit on one side, opposite the contestant and the moderator. The moderator asks a question and the contestant gets to pick one of the nine people to answer the question. The person chosen can tell the true answer if he or she knows it or make up an answer. Then the contestant can decide if the answer is correct or not. Points are given if the person guesses correctly if the answer was correct. A large tic-tac-toe board keeps track of the points. Try these fun questions then make up some of your own:

No-Bake Cookies in a Cup Recipe

Easy to make and yet so yummy—make these easy cookies and give away in a paper cup.

What you need:

2 cups sugar
1⁄3 cup cocoa
1⁄2 cup milk
1⁄2 cup butter
1 cup shredded coconut
3 cups old-fashioned oatmeal (rolled oats)

How to make the recipe:

1. Measure the sugar and put it in the saucepan. Measure the cocoa and stir it all together. Stir it until there aren’t any lumps.

2. Now add the milk and butter. Set the pan on the stove on medium heat and stir the mixture until all the sugar is dissolved. Let it come to a boil. (The mixture is kind of thick so it sort of pops when it boils.) Only let it boil for 1 minute, stirring all the time.

3. Take it off the stove and add the coconut and rolled oats. Stir it all until it is well mixed.

4. Make little mounds of individual cookies on the foil using a spoon. The cookies will be sticky, but they will set up as they harden. It will take about 2 or 3 hours before they are completely set. This makes a lot of cookies—about 30 or so. You’ll be glad you made so many!

Picnic Power Bar

Make these nutritious bars to take on picnics or have for fun anytime. Keep them individually wrapped so they are an easy-grab.

What you need:

2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal (rolled oats)
2 cups bran flakes cereal, crushed
1⁄2 cup raisins
1⁄4 cup shredded coconut
3⁄4 cup dried cranberries
1⁄2 cup salted nuts or peanuts
1⁄4 cup flour
1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 eggs
1⁄2 cup honey
1⁄3 cup oil
1⁄3 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter

What you do
Turn the oven on to 375 degrees. In the large bowl, combine the oatmeal, bran flakes, raisins, coconut, cranberries, nuts, flour, and cinnamon. Stir it all together well. Break the eggs into the small bowl and beat them well with a fork. Add the honey, oil, and brown sugar to the eggs. Put the ingredients in the small bowl into the large bowl and mix the two bowls of ingredients together. Grease the 9x13 pan by rubbing a little butter in the pan with clean fingers or a piece of waxed paper. Press the mixture into the greased pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Take them out of the oven and let them set for 5 minutes—then cut into bars. Let them cool before you wrap each one separately to take on the picnic. Makes 20 bars.

Summer Corn Chowder

We all love corn on the cob in July! A perfect way to use fresh summer corn cut off the cob, this Summer Corn Chowder is fun to make as a group. Serve with star-shaped crackers and cheese.
What you need:

2 tablespoons butter
1 small onion, chopped
1⁄4 cup carrots, diced
1⁄4 cup celery, chopped
1⁄4 cup red and green peppers, diced
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 can chicken broth (14 oz.)
1 cup fresh or frozen corn
3⁄4 cup cream
1 cup milk

What you do:
Melt butter in heavy saucepan. Sauté onion, carrots, celery and red and green peppers in the butter. Set aside. Mix flour, salt, pepper and chicken broth together. Add to vegetables and bring to a boil. If using fresh corn, cook on the cob and drain. Slice off the cob. Add fresh or frozen corn, cream, and milk to soup mixture. Heat thoroughly without boiling. Simmer until ready to serve. Makes about 6 servings.

Picnic-Style Veggie Sandwich

Try this no-meat sandwich that is easy to make and take to a picnic in any weather.
What you need:

2 slices of whole wheat bread
2 tablespoons cream cheese
Shredded carrots
Sunflower seeds
Raisins

What you do:
Lay the two slices of bread side by side on the paper towel. Use whatever bread is a favorite. Spread each slice with a thin layer of cream cheese—about 1 tablespoon per slice. On the left slice, put on the shredded carrots. You can buy carrots already shredded, but if you want to shred them yourself, use a grater. Now sprinkle on the sunflower seeds and raisins. Put the two slices of bread together and put in a sandwich bag. Makes 1 sandwich.

Note: This bread contains no meat, but should be kept cool because of the cream cheese. It should be eaten within 4 hours after preparation or kept in a cooler.

All-American Pumpkin Loaves

Make this all-time favorite quick bread a bit patriotic with white frosting, red cherries, and blue sugar. Then cut and enjoy with coffee or tea.
What you need:
3 - 1⁄3 cups all-purpose flour
3 cups sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 - 1⁄2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1⁄4 teaspoon cloves
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
2⁄3 cup water
2 cups canned pumpkin
Blue decorator’s sugar

What you do
Sift all dry ingredients together. Add the oil, eggs, water, and pumpkin to the dry ingredients. Mix well and pour into 3 large greased bread pans. Bake in a 350°F oven for 1 hour. Cool. Makes 3 loaves. Drizzle loaves with white frosting. Garnish with red candied cherries and blue decorator’s sugar. Makes 3 loaves. Serves 30.

White Frosting Glaze:
In a bowl, mix 1 cup sifted powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon milk. Beat together until well blended.
